It’s been four long years since the Obamas left the White House, but former First Lady Michelle Obama is back on our screens in the new Netflix documentary Becoming.
If you rewind back to 2018, you will remember that The Obama’s signed a multiyear agreement to produce new films and shows with Netflix, and now through their production , we’re getting a full documentary all about Michelle Obama.
The film follows Michelle as she embarks on a 34-city tour to promote her best-selling memoir Becoming, providing a “rare and up-close look at her life” along the way.
With a running time of an hour and a half, viewers are given an “intimate look” into Michelle’s life “during a moment of profound change, not only for her personally but for the country,” and her influence as a public figure and role model.
Directed by Nadia Hallgren and produced by the former first couple’s Higher Ground Productions, which has already produced two Netflix documentaries, the Oscar-winning American Factory and Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” it is an official product: authorized, certified — a statement rather than an investigation. A collection of recollections, exhortations and conversations, illustrated with family photos and woven through the former first lady’s arena-filling 2019 book tour, “Becoming” is best viewed as a companion to her memoir of the same name.
Becoming is an intimate look into the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama during a moment of profound change, not only for her personally but for the country she and her husband served over eight impactful years in the White House.
