Certain situations and circumstances can put you in a bad position forcing you to opt to do things that are unacceptable by the society. With many women getting too desperate and opting to sell their babies at cheaper prices has been on the rise during this harsh economic times. So, how much does a baby cost?
Wednesday, 2nd September, police officers from Machakos police station in Machakos county arrested two women, Tina Mulinge and Winnie Rose Mumbe for allegedly engaging in human trade three months ago. Winnie Rose Mumbe had sold her newborn baby to Tina Mulinge in Kitui for 1000 shillings.
Tina Mulinge is reported to have gone missing from her husband for 9 months only to resurface with a newborn child. Tina then went on to lie to her husband that she had miraculously given birth to the child, but the truth of the matter was that she had actually bought the baby at 1000 bob. Her husband believed her and they lived together with the child and raised her as their own.
The crime came to light when Tina took the baby for a clinic check-up at Machakos Level 5 Hospital where Winnie had delivered the baby and handed it over to her. The nurses at the hospital raised an alarm after they realised that they had helped in delivering the same exact baby, and police officers were called upon to arrest her.
While at Machakos sub county children’s office, children’s officer Emily Kimanzi stated that Tina had lied to her husband about being expectant, and even went to the hospital to deliver the baby when her date was due and later came back to him with the child. Winnie her friend then narrated that she had decided to sell her baby because her husband had asked her to terminate the pregnancy, but she was not ready or willing to do it. That’s why she decided to carry the pregnancy to term, delivered at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, and sold the baby to Tina for Ksh. 1000.
