Garissa County Assembly burns down

Property of unknown value has been destroyed following fire outbreak at the Garissa County Assembly Thursday morning.

The 8.20 am fire whose cause is yet to be established is said to have started at the assembly chambers before quickly spreading to adjacent two storey building where MCAs offices are situated.

According to the Garissa County Assembly Minority Leader Mohamed Ali, the fire gutted down about 40-50% of the county assembly.

“The losses so far are huge. In my own assessment, at least 40 percent of the buildings in the compound were damaged. However, most important is that we managed to salvage important documents from both chambers and the MCAs offices,” he said.

Efforts by members of the public to put off the fire using fire extinguishers proved futile as the chambers floors were carpeted and the ceiling was made of painted wood.

Several teams including the military, county fire department and Kenya Red Cross rushed to the scene to battle to contain the fire.

No casualties have been reported.

Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
