Kipchoge delivered a world masterclass in the running to retain the Olympic title in the men’s marathon at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
He becomes the third man in history to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the marathon after winning in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
The others, who have won back-to-back, are Ethiopia’s Abebe Bikila (1960 and 1964) and East Germany’s Waldemar Sierpinski (1976 and 1980).
In over eight years, Kipchoge has run 17 marathon races, losing only two.
Kipchoge, who is running his fourth Olympics, crossed the finish line in Sapporo in a time of 2:8:38. In Rio de Janeiro 2016, he had a time of 2:08:44.
Kipchoge maintained a social distance of one minute and 20 seconds between him and the second-placed Netherland’s Abdi Nageeye.
The winning margin by kipchoge is the biggest victory gap in an Olympics marathon since 1972 when Frank Shorter of the USA beat Belgium’s Karel Lismont home by two minutes and 12 seconds in Munich.
The Olympic dream is a special dream. For every athlete here it has taken a lifetime of preparation to get to this point. Today I lived my Olympic dream. I always say that sport is like life, whereby you can win and lose. But today was a day where I won. pic.twitter.com/vDzYKcH8Yg
