Tom Okwach's family is still grieving 22 days after a mine shaft collapsed in Abimbo, Siaya County, keeping him under rubble.
Joyce Ochola Ogunde, 22-year-old Okwach's mother, says her family is in pain after the excavator brought to assist with the rescue efforts stopped operations.
This was the second excavator brought in by the county government to assist the operation.
The grieving mother revealed that even the committee formed to lead the rescue operation and the locals who helped with the rescue mission have developed cold feet since then.
Okwach's sister, Janet Atieno Nyunja, has since pleaded with the national government to bring in more experts to help recapture her relatives, dead or alive.
According to Nyunja, it is quite unfortunate that local miners continue their duties and routine mining operations while Okwach is still stranded in the collapsed mines.
Pamela Akelo, a former District Executive Board member responsible for Education in Siaya, likewise urged the government to finalize the recovery as soon as possible.
Akelo also insisted that Okwach's family members be counseled, stating that they are currently going through a traumatic period.
Okwach was among eight miners stranded after the mine shafts collapsed on December 2, 2021.
While six miners were rescued during the incident, one miner lost his life.
