A suspect was fatally shot while fleeing, five of whom were wounded by bullets, after police officers patrolling the Githurai 44 district of Nairobi attacked a 22-year-old student.

According to the Criminal Investigation Directorate (DCI), John Ndegwa, a student at the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, was accused by a gang of six young men who used machetes before stealing his cell phone and Sh10. ,000 cash.
Ndegwa was a visitor in Githurai and had left her brother's resume at Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital to find a job before she was attacked in the 2 pm incident. Later, he decided to take a stroll through the bustling town of Githu when the Bandits attacked him.

”Then, he decided to walk along the majestic Thika Highway towards Githurai to breathe the fresh air of the city and gaze at the rapidly changing skyline. As the crowd approached the town, he sought a place to have lunch before confronting the terror gang that was wreaking havoc in the area. Unaware of the new visitor in Githu, he had gone to the Majengo area, where small-time bandits were trying to establish their local fiefdom but failed after a Police Station was established in the area”. Before the attack, the gang asked the victim to buy cigarettes and the victim made it mandatory by giving them Sh100.

“Then they let him go to a nearby food kiosk to have lunch before ungratefully attacking him after he left the kiosk. However, the police officers on patrol came to the scene immediately after the victim sounded the alarm and informed the bandits who had fled in different directions. However, a bandit drew a homemade pistol that could shoot and fire at rapidly approaching police officers; These policemen immediately jumped down and, without delay in returning the fire, mortally wounded the suspect believed to be the gang's commander.

During the violent shooting exchange, the five suspects ran for their lives.

“As the gunfire ripped through the air, the rest of the suspects managed to escape with their bodies riddled with bullet wounds. A unit of officers, supported by colleagues from the canine division, was immediately deployed to search for the perpetrators,” he said.
Meanwhile, a mobile phone belonging to the seriously injured bandit suspect, whose body was taken to the City morgue for identification, was seized.
Finally, police have asked medical doctors to report any person seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

"We urge medical practitioners to notify anyone entering any medical facility to seek treatment for gunshot wounds"
