A Kiambu County family is in mourning after a young woman and her two-year-old kid were found dead in the River Thiririka in Gatundu.

The woman, Virginia Njeri, 26, had gotten married in Nakuru but was having difficulties in her marriage. Like many others in similar situations, she sought safety in her uncle's home in Githurai.

On August 12, one of her in-laws allegedly picked her and her son Adrian Mejja up. They were supposed to be going to an in-law's house to try to work out their marital troubles. Her final call was to her father.

That was the last time she was heard or seen alive.

When she failed to return, her concerned relatives reported her missing to the Githurai Police Station. They also sought assistance from the general public via social media platforms. Influencer Karangu Muraya and other Kenyans joined the quest. Tragically, Njeri and her small son, Adrian Mejja, were discovered drowned in the River Thiririka. Adrian wore a tiny jumper that helped rescuers and family members identify the bodies. The remains were brought to Thika's General Kago Mortuary for a postmortem examination. The family, however, declined to share the findings for personal reasons.

Many people were astonished to learn that Njeri's spouse did not attend the postmortem. Despite the fact that they were from the same village, no representatives from his family turned up.

News of the deaths spread quickly online. Many Kenyans had been hopeful for a safe return but were left heartbroken by the outcome. Tributes poured in as people expressed their grief and called for answers.

Njeri’s father, deeply distraught, was seen at the mortuary after identifying the bodies of his daughter and grandson.

The tragedy has left many questions unanswered, with the family seeking privacy as they process the painful loss.
